5 ways to earn extra money

As any college student, earning money is quite important to survive through the month. Although many opt for a traditional approach by getting a part-time job, one should not overlook other possibilities.

That’s why I will give you 5 ways to earn extra money. You can pick one of them, all of them or even NONE of them; what matters is that you pick something you like.

Make Youtube Videos

One of the most popular ways to earn extra money — or possibly make an income big enough to live out of it —  is to make Youtube videos. Almost anyone can try this method. All they need is a camera, a video editing tool and a lot of CREATIVITY. I would like you to highlight the last four words I used. As a matter of fact, the popularity of this method to earn money made Youtube a very competitive place. But it doesn’t mean you should give up right away. Even the most random video can make you rich. Charlie’s father did not know the video he uploaded would become extremely popular. Perseverance is the key to success.

First of all, you need to build an audience. Once this step has been done, you can choose amongst those three different ways to monetize your videos: Google AdSense, sponsored videos or Affiliate marketing.

Be a Freelancer

If you wish to earn passive money or simply to earn money in a lazy way (because you already have a job that exhaust you) then freelancing might not be the right method for you. As a matter of fact, being a freelancer is like having another job.

Freelancing is a way to monetize your current set of skills. Although your income may not be stable, it remains a good method of earning extra money. The strongest point of being a freelancer is that you work for yourself. Therefore, you are not forced to work within a specific timeframe. You have the possibility to decide how you wish to work.

Of course, the jobs given to you have deadlines, but how you manage your working time is completely up to you.

It is however important to remember the following: more and more people turn to freelancing as their primary source of income — I am a freelancer myself. As a result, freelancing became very competitive and if you do not already have a portfolio, it can be difficult to find your first job.

But once you’ve made your first time, you are on your way to build a wonderful resume, a professional network, gain new skills as well as the experiences years of studying in a college will not give you.

So if you wish to jump into the amazing world of freelancing, you can try your luck on Upwork — the website I personally use.

Write a Book

Who has never dreamed to have their own book published? Here is the good news: You do not have to be the best writer in the world to write your own book! All you have to do is to gather a pen, a notebook, your creativity and to start working.

Writing a book is a good way to earn a passive income. However, it requires a lot of perseverance and hard work. One of the main reasons why people usually give up on writing a book is because of inconsistency. Sometimes, you may have an explosion of inspiration which will lead you to write 10 pages, and sometimes your mind will be so blank you will face the terrifying writer’s block. These up and down’s are eventually the downfalls of many writers.

But if you are willing to overcome the obstacles, you will have your very own book — something you can be proud of — and you will have a passive income for a lifetime.

If you think you have no chance of writing a novel because of a lack of creativity, you still have the possibility to write an autobiography or even better, a nonfiction book. The advantage of writing a nonfiction book is that you do not need to have any creativity, you simply have to make your own research, compile what you have found, and give your own point of view (however, don’t fall into plagiarism!).

What is great about our era is that you do not even need a publisher once you have finished writing your book. A great alternative is to sell it online under the form of an ebook — it will prevent you from spending too much money.

Sell Your Beautiful Pictures

For all the photography lovers, here is a method to earn extra money by doing something you enjoy.

If you took beautiful pictures of the landscape during one of your travels and you wish to share them with the world, you can monetize them. It is very unlikely that you will earn money quickly if you do not already have an audience, but with patience and perseverance, you will be able to make some extra money — and maybe travel to take some other beautiful pictures.

I have come across a nice application for smartphones called Foap, in which you can publish your pictures and sell them, but also where other people can rate your picture while you rate their own pictures. It is a good way to build your audience in the world of photography (and it’s free, so what are you waiting for?)

I highly discourage you to use this method unless you are not afraid of risks, because this gambling can make you lose more money than the opposite.

If I decided to mention this method, it is because although the risks are high, the gains are also high. If the probability of losing is higher in a game of luck, some other games such as poker — where many factors other than luck have a bigger influence on the game — can make you earn a lot if you play smartly.

Many are those who make a living out of gambling, but it takes a lot of work to reach that point. You will need to train a lot and refrain from using your instincts — because in gambling, instinct usually means failure.

If you decide to gamble online, be careful of frauds and cheaters.

Be careful, gambling is not legal in every country, minors are not allowed to gamble and gambling can lead to addiction. If you believe you might be subject to addiction, please refrain from gambling. I do not claim responsibility for anything that may happen to you as a result of gambling. Make the right decision. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
